near mid air collision

Putting chutes into small planes is one of that ideas that goes "gosh, why didn't we think about that before?". (Probably the materials weren't high tech enough to handle, back then.) I hope it becomes an international standard.

I must question the airmanship of the chap, the tug pilot and the glider pilot! WHAT A SHOCKING DISPLAY OF POOR PILOTAGE! It was a clear day, you could see the curve of the earth almost and out of three aircraft, none were keeping a lookout!

This guy did the absolute right thing in pulling the chute. There's no telling how wrapped up in the tow line he was. He could have had control most of the way down but gotten further entangled and lost it when he was too low to use the chute. This was the right call.
