This is a tutorial on how to fix a 40GB Playstation 3 that has the Yellow Light of Death. I have to stress that the insides of any other Playstation 3 will not look the same as the 40GB model, although you could use this as a reference guide. They are not very different but again they are not the same. The HDGamingRoom does NOT take any responsibility for anything you repeat in this guide. Opening up your Playstation 3 WILL VOID your warranty. Use at your own RISK. This guide will work on 99% of the time as the other 1% could be due to it being a PSU failure.

If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will help the best I can. Remember to comment, rate and of course subscribe.

  • I put on some arctic silver but didn't use the correct heat gun. I want to redo it but when I go through the steps again, the heatsink is now stuck to the motherboard because of the paste. Help please. I went to get a heat gun but now I can't use it because my motherboard is stuck!

  • @nickhexxar We actually did this video twice and we had the same problem, we just pulled at it until it came loose. Took about 20 mins lol.

  • Can you use a solder gun instead?

  • @Espruen I wouldn't think so

  • so after i had this problem fixed it happened again, i had it fixed again but i don't want this problem to happen again, what do i do to prevent this problem from occuring again?

  • @abustaiff Yeah that can happen, the problem never really goes away the only way to really fix it is to send it back to Sony, but that will cost you.

  • Thanks for the guide

It's really works for me .

  • Instead of using a heat gun, can I use a hair dryer?, and do I have to use the thermal paste?

  • Nice bro I'm going try it this weekend

  • still the same.... any other way of fixing ?

  • i have a question, will this process still work if a have a game in the blu-ray player?

  • @pogodafreeride go on ebay and get the copper plates that go ontop of the thermal paste, then reapply paste to the top of copper platings,if u want a example of this go on ebay australia and go 2 the 24.95 ps3 repair kit and it has a video on the sellers page

  • I did it step by step as shown and still didnt fix my problem... :(

  • @Espruen i wouldn't think so i think it would ruin the board

Do NOT send it to Sony. This will NEVER fix this problem, because they can't use lead solder for the joints on the gpu chip, which is causing the YLOD. It's restricted to use in the EU, which was sanctioned by the RoHS organization.

That's the problem... They use lead free solder again, which will YLOD sooner or later.

    The solution:

Reball the solder joints with lead solder and YLOD should never return for this issue.

Thumbs up so all can see how to REALLY FIX YLOD.

  • I think the 40gb is better than the 60 and 80 because I have had my 40gb for 4 years now and still havent got the yellow light of death and my freinds got a 60 and 80 and a year later they got the ylod. Now they have the xbox and I still have the 40gb ps3.
