I don't know why the character is described as 'schizophrenic'. He's not a schizophrenic he's a guilt ridden drunk plagued by memories which are enhanced by alcohol.

One of Mr. Nicholson's other "message" films was "The Last Detail". It's like watching home movies of my Navy days.
