The True Mirror - Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean [CVGS #55]

Baten Kaitos is a game that I have many fond memories of. The game was simply a piece of art. From the incredible visuals, to it's awe-inspiring music and story, the game was the complete package in terms of an exceptional RPG.

Unfortunately, that is not what most people think of when they refer back to this game. Perhaps the game's biggest gripe, which in my opinion was incredibly embellished, is the sub par voice acting. For whatever reason, both Namco and Monlith soft decided that for Baten Kaitos the voice acting would be different. By different, I mean trying to sound like what the "spirit" in the game would hear, which is basically what you are in the game (the player). This led to a very echoed and dull sounding sound (when it came to voice acting).

This is most commonly the biggest gripe people had about the game. To me this means that the game is so fantastic that people just had to rip such a small part of the game that doesn't even contribute to the core elements of the game. To be honest, the voice acting really isn't even that bad. I was fine with it. To make things worse, you have to option in the menu to turn off the voice acting at any time. So really, I don't think people had any reason to complain.

Moving aside from that, the game had incredible music. Probably one of the best video game soundtracks I have ever heard in my life. Motoi Sakuraba has really outdone himself here; which is saying a lot since he has a fantastic repertoire.

Not only was this game a great title, but it's prequel which was also released shortly after on the Gamecube (Baten Kaitos: Origins), ended up being one of my favorite games of all time. Definitely in my top 5.

It improved on every single element of Baten Kaitos and delivered a damn near perfect experience. I highly recommend checking out both these titles if you've ever been interested in picking them up. You will not be disappointed.
