Plane Over Podgorica

Sunset. March 6, 2008. Get a bell and ring it everyday for a year at sunrise and sunset. This installment: Tel Aviv to Frankfurt- the first leg of the journey home. Again it was nearly impossible to tell the time of the sunset. However, this time I noticed this time that the screen identified our location as Podgorica which is the capital of Montenegro. So when I got home, I looked up the sunset for Podgorica and it said it was at 5:39 PM. Lucky.

It was also very difficult to actually see the sun or horizon from our side of the plane. We faced east as the plane flew northwest. Fortunately, Swiss Air has a view from a camera in the cockpit so you can see what the pilots see. At one point there was a flash of light on the wing of the plane. Bright. Yellow and brief. The sky looked like day above the clouds, but the sun was out of viewing range from that little window. So I switched the TV over to look from the pilots' camera and still couldn't see the sun. I assumed it was either down or just going down because it was still so light. I grabbed as many screens of information as possible while we rang the bells to try and determine the time and place later on. Finally I walked to the back of the plane and looked out of one of the western facing windows to see that the sun had indeed set. Maybe we caught it just in time. It's a weird thing to try to do.
