@yewdeald4 because, the dirt won't be easy to hide, and easily cleaned by the fish, or by a gravel cleaner, but a lot of the bacteria grow in the gravel, making it a better biological system instead of the filter holding it.

i still asking how they keep those bottoms of those tanks so clean??

Clean water is when theres no polutants in the water (or very little). Most pollutants consist of things like ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, heavy metals, phosphates, and other chemicals. Which in a heavily planted tank, the plants would absorb it for growth. So not only less maintenance, but a more beautiful tank. On top of that, your giving the discus a more natural environment and allows hiding places. Basic principle for keeping fish is to replicate its environment.

@DiscusKev You're wrong there mate! As you implied, discuss need good water quality. How do you achieve that? Bacterial growth is answer. The bacteria grows in the substrate. Your substrate will harbor the good bacteria. The bad bacteria can be removed by mechanical, biological and physically.
nice plants

A bare bottom tank is needed to ensure a cleaner environment, this is because debris can easily be found and siphoned out. If there was gravel, it will be difficult to maintain clean water. Clean water is one of the key aspects in having a healthy juvenile discus grow.
