It is open in the summer. As a matter of fact I think you can camp there any time of the year. I know the last open day this year is Dec 31, 2001, Pretty sure the first open day next year is Jan 1, 2012. There's a sign at the entrance telling water condition and if the lake is open for swimming and I have never seen it say not open for swimming. Understand that Lake Michigan stay pretty cold for swimming, a lot of people still swim.
