It's about all the Irish criminals being sent to Tasmania as punishment. Beautiful song.

I thought it was about a specific handful of Irish men whom sought equality & freedom form the Crown for all of Ireland & after their banishment unto Tasmania, specifically Port Arthur, they became martyrs & so inspired other Irish to form what would later become the Irish Union Movement?
Hence the "...we fought for justice & not for gain..." line
Though I must say I'm not 100% sure?
