Welcome back to video #2 of the iJapan series.

This time we're going translate into both English and Japanese.

A student in a class stands up to give a short speech about her birthday.

Translate this first part of the speech from Japanese into English.

きのうは、わたしのたんじょうびでした。
あにはわたしにCDをくれました。
わたしは、とてもびっくりしました。
なぜなら、父や母は毎年、
たんじょうびのプレセントをくれましたが、
兄はいつもくれなかったからです。

OK - now translate the end of the speech from English into Japanese.

I asked him, "Why did you give me a present this year?"
He answered, "I broke your CD. Sorry."
It wasn't such a good present.

OK - not too difficult this time. I encourage you to make a video response and join in.

My own video response will be posted in 3 or 4 days from my TaishaJason channel:

Thanks for watching!

  • your lessons are pretty interesting but i didn't manage to actually understand you untill i saw the hiragana. not to be offensive but your pronounciation ia WAY off.

  • @richardjin5555 yep - pronunciation is my weak spot and I do need to work on it - luckily I know teach at a university and my students at this age are much less shy about correcting my Japan when I use it

  • can not find the answer video for the life of me

  • @martinyearly it's on my TaishaJason channel - I put it in the "responses" playlist or just search for the term "iJapan"

  • Hi. I've been watching your videos, finding them very interesting, and I am wondering about how safe things are in Japan for females. I understand you may not know specifically, but maybe you could give me a general idea from what you've seen? Thanks.

  • I did a video about this topic on my TaishaJason response channel - go over there and check under the playlists and you'll see it.

    It's very safe generally speaking.
