Classic Game Room - ATARI 7800 JOYSTICK CONTROLLER review

Classic Game Room HD reviews one of the worst controllers ever made, the Atari 7800 joytick controller. Wow! This sucks. This is what happens when you design a controller on paper and never actually play the thing to see how it works. Granted it has an awesome chrome styled stainless steel ATARI emblem on it, but that's about all it has going for it. This joystick for the Atari 7800 Prosystem is terrible and CGRHD shows you why. Odd design, poor button placement and crappy joystick action result in the losing joystick for a winning game console. If you play Atari 7800 what you need to get is the Atari 7800 gamepad from Europe or Australia, not this thing. Yes it works for games like Ballblazer, Karateka and Ninja Golf... but so goes the Sega Genesis controller, so just use it instead. Fortunately this does NOT work for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PS3, Wii or Magnavox Odyssey 2 retro classic old school arcade video game systems. This review is dope.

it really was a bad controller. you really couldn't hold it in your hand the way they show it in the pictures, because the joystick's movement keeps shifting the controller out of your hand--especially when your hand got all sweaty while playing. The only thing I could do was set the controller on the floor, press it down with my left hand, and then use the joystick with my right hand. Far more stability.

I owned a 7800 system back in the day. I can't remember what I did with it. Wish I still had it. Anyway, though I agree with this review about the controller...I would have to say the controller here is WAY better that the 5200 controller!!

Throw out that garbage of a controller. Just use a Sega Genesis controller!

I never found the controller to be that bad, I never played the 5200 to compare, that looks rough since it doesn't self center. But this was fine, took a little getting used to, I think almost every controller takes a little getting used to though.

Does the 7800 controller actually have two buttons that do separate things or are they just two switches in parallel?

They got rid of the key pad which is great (I'll never understand the logic behind putting keypads on controllers) and reduced the complexity down to 2 buttons but they couldn't figure out a good layout. I'll also never understand why the 5200 controller is so complex for games so simple. Luckily you can just use a genesis pad, works like a charm.

I used to use my Sega Master System controller on my Atari 7800. It worked flawlessly.
