Deputy Wounded, Pot Grow Suspect Killed

A Lassen County sheriffs deputy was wounded in the arm during a shootout with a suspected marijuana grower Tuesday, June 16, 2009, about 1 p.m. The deputy was among a group of five, including two fellow officers and two Bureau of Land Management officers who were doing reconnaissance or scouting the area about 10 miles south of Little Valley on public lands near Dixie Valley Ranch. Lassen County Sheriff Steve Warren said the officers stumbled upon an illegal marijuana growing operation, spotting two subjects who immediately surrendered. While searching the camp, a deputy approached a closed tent where a third subject was hiding with a high-powered rifle. The suspect shot the deputy, the bullet passing through a lower forearm and shoulder and exited out his back. He was taken by helicopter to a Redding hospital where he was being treated Tuesday night. Upon hearing the shot, the officers returned gunfire killing the suspect, Warren said. Within an hour, 50 law enforcement personnel were at the location off of Forest Service Road 22, including members of the California Highway Patrol, deputies from Lassen, Modoc and Shasta counties, and Susanville police. Around 2 p.m., Shasta County sheriffs deputies Keith Sharp and Quentin Johnston, and U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officers Nelson Dodds and Adam Hill stopped a vehicle near Corder Farms on Little Valley Road. Four subjects, who are believed to have been at the grow site, were arrested. All six suspects were taken to jail in Susanville.
