Maybe so. But I was shocked to see this, since I honestly never knew this version ever existed. (My affiliate must have opted not to air it.)
But at least Charles was in his rightful seat, unlike the MG-HS Hour.
And at least it was more like the Match Game we know compared to that '98 version I'd rather wipe from my mind.

this version wasn't as good...the magic wasn't there with the panel or the host. HOWEVER...considering the act they were trying to follow, at least they didn't completely screw up the format...they just freshened it up. The theme was decent...the set was similar to the original...and the opening credits were a take on the original. Not bad...certainly better than the 1998 version.

I've always thought this was a worthy successor to Match Game '7x. Everybody seems to forget that the 'magic' DEVELOPED with the previous version. Watch some of the early episodes of Match Game '73, to see what I mean. (Brett has said in inteviews that they were very lucky to have had that combination, but no one TRIED for it, it just kind of happened) And the ratings weren't bad. The biggest problem was that ABC aired this at 12noon. MANY affiliates had noon newscasts and didn't clear it.

@ChihuahuaboyDH Of course I've always known that "Match Game '73-'79", "Match Game" (1979-82) & "Match Game PM" were all hosted by the great Gene Rayburn as well! "MG PM" aired in syndication from 1975-81.
R.I.P., Gene Rayburn (emcee), Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly (regular panelists), Johnny Olson (announcer) & Mark Goodson & Bill Todman (producers & creators). You are all deeply & sadly missed.

I'd like to give a fair rating & assessment of the four different versions of "Match Game" that aired from 1962 to 1999, but I haven't seen the original "The Match Game" (hosted by who else but the great Gene Rayburn) that originally aired on NBC from 1962 to 1969. I'll just say the best version of "MG" is the classic one we've all gotten to know & love ("Match Game '73-'79", "Match Game" from 1979-1982 & "Match Game PM", of course) & "Match Game ('98)" rating the worst version. "MG '90'"s OK.

I think the syndicator for Feud wanted a companion piece and might have considered Match Game for it. But game shows outside Feud, Wheel, TPiR, and J! were getting out of vogue by 1991. Everything premiering in 1990 was gone by 1991(MG, LMAD90, TTTT90, Tic Tac, Joker, Challengers, Trump Card, Quiz Kids CHallenge). Daytime WOF and Concentration stopped making new episodes. Davidson Pyramid got cancelled by Xmas 1991.

I am soooo dumb. Audience: How dumb are you? I am soooo dumb. I just now realized Brad Garrett played (blank) after all these years.
Answer: Herman Munster. Did you match my answer? If so, light up the green triangle.

Brad Garret had it somewhat right. The LA Kings had just completed a landmark deal sending the Great Gretzky to tinseltown, and "capped" it off by advertizing for what turned out to be one of the best NHL All-Star Games to date, and the last really significant event held at Chicago Stadium. The 'Hawks had a power-packed team that year, winning the Norris Division (beating the Red Wings in standings), to lose in the first round of the playoffs.

Lets put it this way guys, nothing will ever compare to Match Game 7X, ever. There's no way to mimic the cohesiveness that the panel and Gene had. Everyone had a genuinely good time and just enjoyed making us laugh. This format was okay, Ross did a decent job. I think that they should've did a remake for 2000, but with CNR and Brett involved either as panelists, producers or both, to recreate that magic.

@BMANBLAKNBLU sadly, she did...in 2003 of a brain anyurism. RIP Nell.

This is a decent revival of "Match Game", but isn't as good as "Match Game 70x" (with Gene Rayburn). It is, however, better than "Match Game ('98)" (with Michael Burger).
R.I.P. Charles Nelson Reilly...1931-2007.

It isn't Match Game without Gene Rayburn... or Brett Somers... or Richard Dawson. Gahhh!! lol
On this version of "Match Game", how come only the winning player gets to keep his/her money, but the loser doesn't?
cgsguy 3 years ago
because the loser lost and the winner won
