The overall goal of the Life Sciences Greenhouse of Central PA is to find those life sciences discoveries that not only are commercially viable, but improve human health. The Keystone Nanotechnology lab is housed in the Hershey Center for Applied Research, where researchers are working hard to come up with new ways to deliver drugs, like chemotherapy, effectively and safely to people. It takes an average of ten years from when a drug is discovered to its commercialization and approval. It takes a lot of money, time and risk to work through the stumbling blocks of this long process. Other companies in the Applied Research building like Apogee are creating cancer drug trials to fight cancer. And, Saladex is another company within the Life Sciences Greenhouse that is a success story. They've developed a novel diagnostic test that prevents toxicity in cancer patients making chemotherapy more effective and safe. Dr. Mel Billingsley, President & CEO of this group, says that it's rewarding to see a company succeed economically and also benefit the lives of human beings.
