Lions instinctively seek out the weak and sick animals. You correctly note the hippo was not defending herself. Hippos are bad tempered and immensely powerful. A healthy hippo would march into the river with three lions on her back with little problem. The lions are filling their role of removing sick and aged animals from the eco system.
