For several months in 2005, a friend in Texas invited me to come down and take some wild hogs (not javalina).

They have been multiplying the last few years in Texas and have become quite a nuisance. They are classified as pests by the Wildlife Department and can be hunted year round.

The animals can grow to well over 400 pounds and can destroy crops, gardens, water supplies, yards, and even golf courses.

The high cost of fuel had me concerned about the cost. My wife indicated that I should go, not just for the hunt, but to visit friends that I had not seen in over 13 years. Sooo, I went.

These animals do not taste like your regular farm hogs, nor do they taste like deer or elk. They certainly do not taste like chicken. They do have a reasonable flavor and the sausage that I make is wonderful.

  • Thanks mhainds, I had to use the longbow with no sights because they were only moving at night. Unless one uses a laser, the sights are about useless.

Lots of hogs in Texas period. They are over run with them and they are considered pests. No license or tags needed.

On the ranch that I hunted, there are hogs even bigger than me, I just didn't get a chance at one.

  • How the hell do you think that meat of any kind gets to the grocery store? Do you think that those cute little cellophane wrapped goodies are cloned in the back by the butcher? I happen to like the fact that I can harvest, THAT IS HARVEST, wild all natural, no chemical b.s. added, wholesome meat for the family.

May you should get off your lazy ass and try some real food for a change. Your mind may just clear up so you can enjoy life as much as our family does.

  • Not quite Jerker. Hogs have tusks and teeth. A long bow with no sights and homemade arrows is something that you evidently never considered trying. Sport, no, challenging, absolutely. Not for the faint of heart and sissy men or girlie boys.

  • Just ignore those lazy drug addicted GreenPeace idiots.

The stupid bastards would probably get killed trying to HUG a wild hog!!!!

  • Nice to see others still bowhunting with a traditional longbow. I love it and wouldn't bowhunt any other way. I have harvested my fair share of wild hogs with my longbows. When the hogs are moving at night like that you have to get out and slowing walk a creek to find them (if hunting during the daytime.) When it gets that hot down in Texas the hogs will be bedded up under a nice mesguite tree on a creek bed.

  • Good job ,nice narration.

  • amen!!!!!!!

  • Wish I had that problem

  • A friend of mine got 13 hogs in two days in south Texas one time. Largest boar was 440 pounds and sported 5' ivory!
