For more information go to www.palouserivermusic.com. This is a performance by Paul Ely Smith on fretless gourd banjo of his "back-engineered" version of Louis Moreau Gottschalk's "The Banjo" (1854-55), originally for piano solo.

  • This is great. An excellent bit of musicology in your essay on the piece as well. This back-engineering is one of those genius things that only seems obvious once someone does it.

  • Bravo. Many pianists should listen to your version to get the real notion of how this piece should be performed. Rhythmic and dry... a banjo sound.

  • Great performance.

Someone posted "Souvenirs d 'Andalousie" on the Classic Banjo Ning so I was looking up Gottschalk and found this. It's a a wonderful piece.

  • @EDSOMUSIC If I remember it correctly, it was originally written for the pianoforte.

  • Wow! Absolutely beautiful. I hear it. I'm back in 1830s New Orleans.

  • Bravo for this arrangement. From Banjo to Piano to Banjo. Rich Idea. It doesn't seem to be easier on original banjo than on piano.

  • Excellent arrangement. Beautiful instrument.
