For more information go to www.palouserivermusic.com. This is a performance by Paul Ely Smith on fretless gourd banjo of his "back-engineered" version of Louis Moreau Gottschalk's "The Banjo" (1854-55), originally for piano solo.
This is great. An excellent bit of musicology in your essay on the piece as well. This back-engineering is one of those genius things that only seems obvious once someone does it.

Bravo. Many pianists should listen to your version to get the real notion of how this piece should be performed. Rhythmic and dry... a banjo sound.

Great performance.
Someone posted "Souvenirs d 'Andalousie" on the Classic Banjo Ning so I was looking up Gottschalk and found this. It's a a wonderful piece.

@EDSOMUSIC If I remember it correctly, it was originally written for the pianoforte.

Wow! Absolutely beautiful. I hear it. I'm back in 1830s New Orleans.

Bravo for this arrangement. From Banjo to Piano to Banjo. Rich Idea. It doesn't seem to be easier on original banjo than on piano.
