Wine is a translation layer (a program loader) capable of running Windows applications on Linux and other POSIX compatible operating systems. Windows programs running in Wine act as native programs would, running without the performance or memory usage penalties of an emulator, with a similar look and feel to other applications on your desktop.

The Wine project started in 1993 as a way to support running Windows 3.1 programs on Linux. Bob Amstadt was the original coordinator, but turned it over fairly early on to Alexandre Julliard, who has run it ever since. Over the years, ports for other Unixes have been added, along with support for Win32 as Win32 applications became popular.

Wine is still under development, and it is not yet suitable for general use. Nevertheless, many people find it useful in running a growing number of Windows programs

  • I can't stand it when people show tutorials on systems where everything is already installed.

I want to be able to see everything that occurs while something is being installed.

Linux will never be popular if everything is this much of a pain. People, including myself just want to click on a perdy little "install" icon and be able to run a program. Why isn't this so with Linux?

Thank you for posting. I was bashing my head on the keyboard for a few minutes there but seem to be working. :)

  • HELP!! i feel like a monkey trapped in a cage, 1st time ubuntu user here, plz help, gimme a link to install wine pl0x

  • agree with you..windos is unstable but..its eazy..i hv istalled ubuntu and I DONT KNOW NOTHING! i'm not a hacker or smth like that to understand all that little codes... sudo dpkg ..wtf is that.... its time to go back to windows....

  • Basically Ubuntu is free because its virtually impossible to do anything easily. Passwords, archaic text commands.... I just had flashbacks when using a netbook with kubuntu and I am trembling with anger at trying to get anything including wine to work appropriately. Good for you if you have it working but Microsoft gets more of my dollars.
