Sir Malcolm Arnold produced a mesmerising score for this 1969 TV version of Dickens classic tale of David Copperfield's life from childhood to maturity. Directed by oscar winning director Delbert Mann this Emmy award winning production featured Robin Phillips in the role of Copperfield with an all star british cast including Sir Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, richard Attenbrough, Michael Redgarve, Edith Evans, Ron Moody, Susan Hampshire, Sinead Cusack and last but certainly not least Pamela Franklin

  • It's an incredible 41 years ago since I ran this film in 1970 at the cinema where I was a projectionist (it had a 20th Century-Fox theatrical release in the UK) and I thought Malcolm Arnold's score was totally wonderful! I have the soundtrack LP of the score, pressed in the US, as well as the CD and the 45 rpm single of the main title and end title music that was pressed in Japan. I don't think the single was released in either the UK or US. Alistair Mackenzie was wonderful as young David.

  • @ThoughtTraveler Yes, there are a few intelligent, quality films still being made, but the circuits rarely book anything like that for their chains of multiplexes as they know that generally speaking, the modern day audiences wouldn't be intelligent enough to appreciate them, or to want to pay to see them. So they usually end up going straight onto DVD or being shown on television instead.

  • @onceaboy1947

The whole industry is truly junk films. Nothing but remakes of remakes of remakes. Brain dead cinematic fare for a brain dead generation.

Can you believe it...now they are making a movie called "Abraham Lincoln - Vampire Hunter". Groan...

However, I did see the 2011 version of Jane Eyre on DVD and I thought it was brilliant. Thankfully there are a few points of light out there.

  • @ThoughtTraveler The cinema I knew and grew up wih is now long gone. In its place we have soul-less multiplexes filled with noisy yobs whom nobody bothers to keep quiet or throw out; slipshod presentation and junk films made for junk audiences who happily pay extortionate admission prices to see them. Now that the cinema industry is moving over to digital presentation via DVDs, why should people pay a fortune to see a DVD in a noisy multiplex instead of seeing it at home? The cinema's had it.

I liked your comment. A truly great piece of music from a master.

I suppose 41 years ago you could sit and watch a film without some irritating yob texting or talking on a cell phone next to you. I think that there once was an age of cinema where people actually dressed up and went out to dinner and a show. Now (at least in the US) cinemas have given way to Mega Theatres where mobs of brutish teenagers take over that whole complex with their rude antics.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. In a world of movies that are remakes of remakes of remakes - this 1969 movie really was a priceless gem.

What an outstanding cast of some of the finest English actors of the time.

This TV film reminds me of another great TV classic - the 1970 Jane Eyre with Susannah York and George C. Scott. The soundtrack to this movie was by John Williams and is still a classic.

  • I loved the beautiful haunting quality of this movie 41 years ago and I love it still. I can only hope and dream that I may someday make a movie with quality anything like this.

  • @davidleigh65 hi, been a collector of japanese vinyl for over 35 years and this sountrack is hi on my wants list, is there any way i could get you to do a photo copy of the japan 7" insert for the soundtrack , regards from englans

  • The BBC Classical Radio frequency-Radio3-broadcast the whole 20 minute suite in January in an early morning unlisted appearance. Ruman Gamba conducting one of the American or Canadian orchestras. what a treat that was.Unfortunately due to sound-space the BBC has had to expire the broadcast from its archive.
