This version of "While Shepherds watched their flocks by night", composed by D W Solomons, is based on the tunes On Ilkley Moor bah t'hat, Este's Psalter, Auld Lang Syne, Scotland the Brave and Sing a Song of Sixpence. It is sung here by the dwsChorale in a low key (ATBarB), but a score of the mixed voice choir version is also available for choirs who would like to perform it, free of charge, at www.cpdl.org

  • "When I were just a lad", growing up in Leeds, we regularly used to sing While Shepherds to Ilkley Moor. There i'n't nowt like a classic! This version's way too flowery - the shepherds were down-to-earth working blokes, after all.

  • @tdhwilkinson flowery because I was attempting to fit as many versions in as possible (not just Ilkley Moor). Just a bit of fun after all :-)

  • Growing up in Leeds, we used to regularly sing it to this tune - that said, this version is veeeeeeeery slooooow. Speed it up a bit lads!

  • I'd put money on the inn-keeper in Bethlehem being a Yorkshireman, which could explain this.
