Apo tin akri tis polis (From the edge of the city) 1998. An outstanding movie. The lifestyle of some Pontic Greeks that now live around Menidi, that arrived from Kazakhstan, is shown. They are known collectively in Greece as Rossopontioi (Pontic Greeks from Russia and the former USSR, mainly the Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan). Many of them, are the proud survivors of death marches in Pontos in the early 20s and Stalinist repression and eventual deportation to the Asian Republics of the former USSR, in the 40s. Stathis Papadopoulos is excellent as Sasha and the delectable Theodora Tzimou (born in Uzbekistan) is superb as the prostitute. We see the tension between the strictness of Sasha's dad "did you bring a prostitute in my house?" and Sasha's "a-moral-ity". Theodora's pimp and Sasha will duke it out at the end in a wrestling duel, in the Pontic Greek tradition. Giannaris is a complex genius, with a unique way of telling a story bit by bit. The brilliant Giannaris passes no judgment on their lifestyle, he just tells the story. He wrote the script, directed and is the voice of the interviewer in the movie. The film deservedly won Giannaris best director prize, in the Thessaloniki film festival.
