Variant Chinese characters existed in ancient Chinese dynasties and in many masterpieces and steles of Chinese calligraphy. The reasons and historical backgrounds are mentioned in the above Chinese articles and resources. In ancient China, it was not easy to unify a system such as meters, languages, and etc. Even for a native and educated Chinese person today, usually s/he will not be able to recognize 異體字 if s/he has not studied Chinese calligraphy or etymology to a certain level. So please relax and don't worry if the contents here have confused you who are either native English speakers or beginners of Mandarin Chinese. The studies of Chinese variants and etymologies are never meant to be easy, even for experienced Chinese calligraphers, linguists, or sinologists. Those variant characters are commonly used and seen in masterpieces of Chinese calligraphy, Chinese brush painting (CBP), and Chinese seals, though variants are not taught in public schools and are not used in our modern society for pen writing. There are high percentages of variants as seen in famous calligraphy models of Ouyang Xun and Lishu steles, and in classical CBP.
