Another nice cathedral in Boston, MA. Wonderful history. Check the Wikipedia article on it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_South_Church

"Members of the congregation have included Samuel Adams, William Dawes, Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Sewall, and Phillis Wheatley." Wow!

  • The organ that 'started it' for anybody is a very special organ! You should definitely play it whenever you get a chance!

  • I haven't, but this is actually the organ that started my obsession. I heard it on new year's eve when I was eight years old.

  • I know...I guess I should have specified *antiphonal* organ. lol.

11 ranks in the back gallery and 119(?) in the chancel... something like that... Such a gorgeous organ, definitely one of the best in Boston.

Have you played this organ? I really need to play it next time I visit Boston! I don't know why I haven't played it yet! I need to get on that.

  • Actually, most of the organ is in the front of the church. There's an antiphonal section on the balcony, but that doesn't count for too many pipes. You can see those beautiful full-length wooden pipes of the contrabombard on either side, though!

  • A pity *it* was too dark that is!

  • A pity i was too dark to see the organ in the back! We sort of get a glimpse of a few silver pipes in the shadows however. Such a gorgeous church, and much smaller than one might think.

  • Old South Church should be admired for its firm issue of favor of gay rights and marriage. While it is a long time sister church to Park Street church they are sure different sisters. New England Congregationalists come in all sizes and shapes
