INS KALPENI commissioned by Chief Justice of Kerala

The indigenous Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (FAC) INS Kalpeni was commissioned by Chief Justice of Kerala Jasti Chelameswar at a formal ceremony held at the Southern Naval Command on 14th October 2010. INS Kalpeni is the seventh of the new generation of water Jet Fast Attack Craft, designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata. These ships are an improvement upon the earlier versions of the fast attack craft, with a more efficient hull form that has been developed indigenously.

Lending its name to the ship, Kalpeni is one of the most beautiful islands of Lakshadweep. It is the closest island to the mainland after Androth.

These new classes of ships have been built keeping in mind the critical requirements of naval craft with improved stealth and networking capabilities. These ships are capable of speed in excess of 35 knots, while the modified aluminum superstructure reduces rader cross section and provides improved habitability with fully air -- conditioned modular type accommodation.

Ideally suited for interception of fast moving surface craft the ship will perform roles such as coastal surveillance and patrol, anti -- smuggling, fishery protection, search and rescue operations, naval escort operations etc.
