Much more gripping and authentic than the other crazy scenes.
I was surprised at the emotion it generated in me.

It was hard for me to watch this scene. I can only wonder how hard it must have been for Gregory Peck and Angie Dickinson to sit there and watch it first hand. And I can only wonder even more still, how hard it was for Bobby Darin to create such a heart wrenching, gut clenching moment that rings so true. And then when he grabs hold of Gregory, and Gregory holds like he was a baby . . . the look on his face when he gently lays him down, and then when he smooths his hair. God, it was so powerful.

I saw this movie years ago, and I can't believe I didn't remember this scene. Bobby Darin just blows me away; what a talent!

@JoanOfArc14 Sorry to read of your accident and trauma. Thousands of GI's who were in Vietnam and experiencing similar issues were ignored by the VA for years. Some, unable to bear the burden any longer ended their lives at their own hand. In this scene Darin captures the essence of the horrors of combat. The residual pain. The damage to the soul and the personality, that bullets could not accomplish. Every American GI suffers in a special way, pain, anguish and heart ache. I wish you well.

@lorrainewands lorraine douglas won a second oscar in the 1970s for a peter sellers movie

bobby darin was sooooo great on this film.... and he had no formal training as an actor. it's beyond me that he was not awarded the academy award for best supporting actor. what was good about melvyn douglas' performance in "hud" that he won the award instead!
-
@Tazal I like Douglas, but have not seen Hud either, however I do believe he received the Oscar due to seniority and the fact that he probably wouldn't live to make another film in which he was given a significant role. Oh well.

@liverpoolishgirl I believe it! This scene is simply incredible!

@JoanOfArc14 I'm sorry to hear about your experience, but am glad that you have been able to grow from it. I agree, this scene is incredible and Darin's performance simply beyond fantastic. I used to watch just this scene over and over, partly because of the raw emotion and reality of his acting and of what so many thousands of men must have endured during that time.

One of THE most underrated singers and actors of MY generation. I loved him, no matter what I saw him in. Shame he left it to a radio broadcast for Connie Francis to find out that THEIR wedding would never happen. But - Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee! You couldn't BUY that "perfection" for the times.
I was not expecting what happened to me when I watched this scene. I had been in a traumatic auto accident, they had to pull me out of a burning car. I felt myself starting to relive the whole thing and I almost didn't get through this. This is how awesome Bobby's performance was. I'd sure like to know who won the Oscar instead of him. Sometimes I hate Hollywood, they give the award many times to the wrong one. He deserved the Oscar for this, and no one else!

Melvyn Douglas won for his role in "Hud", and contrary to what Kevin Spacey has in his biopic, "Beyond The Sea", Douglas was not sick and his win was not the product of a "sympathy" vote.

He was an incredibly talented actor. His work on this scene absolutely stunned the entire cast and crew of the movie, even old pros like Gregory Peck. I think he should have won the Oscar, but he lost out to Melvyn Douglas for his role in "Hud".

i didn't mean that he wasn't a good actor just the way his talent has been "over shadowed" by some of his "peers", not that there we're any. Believe me in the uk our only acsess to his videos our people like you self who put them on, and damn fine work you our doing to.

I didn't think that you were saying that he wasn't a good actor. I was just agreeing with you on his acting talent. I don't know why movies like Captain Newman and Too Late Blues have been allowed to fall out of print. I think that they are fine films overall, not just because Bobby Darin is in them.
