Episode #69, Season 3

Dwayne is selected for Phi Beta Kappa, and his mother comes to town to watch his induction ceremony. Julian tells Whitley that he wants to ask her something important during their next lunch date, leading her to believe that he plans to propose. He instead asks her to spend the summer with him in Washington, D.C.; he will get her a secretarial job with his company. When Whitley insists on attending summer school and taking an internship, Julian accuses her of being sheltered. Whitley goes to Dwayne's apartment in search of advice, and mistakes Mrs. Wayne for a maid. Dwayne tries to cheer Whitley during a dinner party organized by his mother; he admits that Whitley is spoiled, but believes that Julian should give her some credit for setting her sights on a career. Mrs. Wayne warns her son that Whitley is trouble. Whitley gives Dwayne a gift and thanks him for always being so supportive. Mrs. Wayne asks her to join them at Dwayne's induction ceremony.

  • Julian was being an ass. Whitley is a little sheltered and spoiled. So she loves her gucci and credits cards? There was a time in the beginning of the series she looked down on others, but her character grew, and she appreciated others no matter what they're background was. She has class, she has brains, she has spunk, she's getting a college education and wants a career, and clearly in this scene she wasn't going to take no shit. But I liked Whitley, and she knew more that he thought she did.

  • "Qunto kinte Kuta kinte just bring the ding dong check". that was her funniest line ever. That line just stuck in my head all these years. I been looking for this episode just for those line.

  • so shes NOT suppose to further her education wit summer school n a great intership...shes suppose to "get real life experience" by being ur floosie all summer n getting massages n crossiants n being a good little secretary?" that doesnt sound too right to mee....

  • They act like DC isn't merely a train ride away. He could have lived in Virginia and worked in DC.

  • i love how mrs. wayne had that running commentary under her breath "look like he wore you out" // "i know it WAS" // "i guess that's a compliment buy ANYway"

  • @demiere1998 I disagree with your assessment. I loved this show and it was extremely successful because the entire cast had great chemistry and worked wonderful together...especially once they rid themselves of the boring Lisa Bonet and equally boring and goofy Marisa Tomei...It sounds like your allegiances lean more toward the Cosby Show if you truly believe that a couple of appearances by Rashad and Knight-Pulliam were the reason for ADWs success...not!

  • I love Pattie Labelle as Dwayne mom!! Perfect casting.

  • Whitley told Julian at 6:10-6:41! You GO GIRL! (I love that phrase from Martin!)

  • Mr. Gaines: Anybody tell you you look like that Patti LuLaBelle? Mr. Gaines is hilarious. Him, Patti LaBelle, Dwayne, Sinbad, Jaleesa and the occasional appearances from Phylicia Rashad and Keshia Knight-Pullman made this show or it would not have been all that good!

  • @TWIGGY281 I agree with you but it's weird because Col. Taylor marries Jaleesa Vinson, who I absolutely love in this show, Kimberly's parents lived in Ohio, and Patti LaBelle became Dwayne's down-home momma! I'm glad they took off Maggie because ratings went down with her on it. I wish they could have kept Lisa Bonet on though because I mean she was the star but then Whitley and Dwayne wouldn't have been the focus of attention on the show and Patti LaBelle wouldn't have played Dwayne's mother.

  • @bfnfamily I said a Trophy not a Trophy WIFE and yes they would ask them to just come follow him around all summer live with him, rather than stay in VA to further her career. I don't think Julian would have even married Whitley had they stayed together you do know they broke b/c he criticized her to the point of changing everything about her.

  • @MsKwan09

Men don't ask trophy wives to do that.
