Michael is avoiding phone calls regarding his dear friend and former lover Chris who is dying back in America. While trying to write, he is disturbed by the noisy surfers next door as they get ready for a weekend away of surf. C.K., one of the surfers, remains behind to surf the local beach. At the beach cafe for lunch with his old friend Angus, Michael again avoids discussing Chris back in America. Angus catches Michael watching C.K. on the beach and teases him but Michael denies any interest in the surfer. Left on his own, Michael watches C.K. catch a series of waves. After a big wave and a wipe out, C.K. disappears in the surf. Michael looses site of C.K. until he sees him on the beach taking off his wetsuit before he heads back home. Michael remains on the beach then makes his way home. Once inside his house, Michael sees C.K. walking towards him on his way to the living room where he makes himself at home. Michael does not know why the surfer is in his house but before the night is over he will discover more about himself than he may have been ready for.

Interesting, touching film. In a sense, this reminded me a little of the puzzle I wrestled with when I watched Field of Dreams (trying to figure out if James Earl Jones character was alive or not and if/when he crossed over).
Now you know that is not true. Some are happy and/or funny. Perhaps you choose the ones with strong emotions. Perhaps you have strong emotions and this is a release for you.
"Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. " Dylan Thomas Michael & Chris agreed not to watch each other die but remember each other young in love. CK hit head on rocks, bled into brain (not M's nosebleed) & died. Rage at death can't be outrun.
i really don't understand how CK died, and the signficance of michael's nosebleed, and the ring of the phone. i just know that the writer is trying to connect the situation with chris.
.... what a sad story, very tragic it was... who made this film? the writer was running from his problem with his former lover Chris.... but then again he must accept the truth about Chris... so it is just like a same "persona" of Chris which was CK came to Michael... accepting the devastating truth of reality...

@ roger..Ck died while he was surfing.before michael ever talked to CK.
It's more of halucination..
he's dead almost at the start of the film..
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night. "
