Lots of nuclear powered ships around doing nothing in mothballs---they are called submarines---marry up the reactors with the desalination process. Unlike civilian reactors the navy reactors have redundancy times 2 and times three in some cases and are safe.

the amount of energy it takes to de-salinate water is huge, like nuclear-reactor size energy. if only it were so easy...
