This is actually a good scene (can't see why it didn't make the cut though) it's good to see a more vulnerable side of Zoe, as well as the roots of Mal's cynicism

Joss Whedon said he wanted an action scene to start off the show with a bang.

You're right it's a great scene that shows a lot about the characters, but it may not have fit in to the general flow of the show, I know that sounds weird but sometimes you have to sacrifice one great scene to make the show work as a whole.

It is still sad though. And you're right too. Mal and Zoe are the only ones left from their platoon. :)

Yes there were. But there were ridiculously fewer people getting medically evacuated than went into the valley. I'm looking it up, but I think Zoe is talking to someone and is telling them that.

This is an amazing scene because in the first scene, before Mal runs out to man the gun he kisses a cross which means he believed in God but after Serenity Valley he lost his faith and for the rest of the series he's always down on Sheppard Book and religion.

First of all Mal's not a cynic, look it up, it was a Greek philosophy and ethical theory before people overwrote the definition, making it refer to a blend of pessimism and skepticism. If this scene was in it would have altered the history of Firefly's 'verse. In the pilot Mal is seen kissing a cross and fighting with bravado, it's only when he sees the masses of purple belly landing ships and the carpet bombing of the valley that he is overwhelmed with despair.
