Dear All,
About the exciting helicopter flight to the top of the Franz Josef glacier.
We humans desire, seek and relish thrills. I think it must be the adrenaline rush and the feeling of living dangerously.
The heli-ride to the top of the glacier is 20% adrenaline and once you land - 80% prayer. I was simply very unprepared for what you I saw up there. Landing on the snow one can realize the magnificence of the creator.
Absolutely white powder snow, clear blue skies, sunlit snow covered mountain peaks and absolute quite (if you can forget the noise of the rotors)
The brief flight from the town of franz-josef is exciting. .....lush rainforests, towering mountains and the sapphire-blue ice of the glacier filled with caves and crevasses, the pristine alpine wilderness..... and then the spectacular landing on the neve of the glacier... in a blizzard of powdered snow created by the turbulent air of the rotors.
We got about 10 minutes with the snow. The experience is unforgettable.
Way back is even more intense. What with sky high water falls falling in a continuous spray and getting lost in to the glacier, only to emerge may miles later on flat land.
Costing about 200 New zealand Dollars (May 2010), it is worth every cent.
The pilots are the best and you do not have to worry about a thing once you are strapped in. But be prepared for a few stunt manoevures that could put the fear of god in you. :)
