Sorry for the poor quality in this video, this was part of a in store demonstration video from 1974 created to playback on a loop, video material to sell new color televisions and also promote the "new dimension of color" at channel 0

The playback quality is very poor. This clip actually came from that 1974 3/4 video tape. Sadly though it hadnt been stored well and had begun to deteriorate badly. Through many hours of cleaning clogged heads and baking the cassette, this was some of the only images i could squeeze from the tape.

As far as i know these clips were never aired.

  • @bigfaluda All commercial channels adopted the American spelling of "color", it wasn't just Channel 0. But ABC defied the trend and used the proper spelling "colour"

  • @aussiebeachut I think this was only for Channel 0 Melbourne.

  • Ch 0 were actually experimenting with transmitting colour in the late 60's. Reg Ansett, (owner of the station) very much enjoyed the program "Bonanza" & (dodgy!) arrangements were made to transmit this program in colour as a test. As there were no PAL colour TV's in Australia then, a 'doctored' NTSC colour TV from the US was used to receive the signal. This occurred for months until the PMG (ACMA from those days) noticed an extra unusual signal (colour burst) on Ch0's signal.. The game was up!

  • @SuperSpaceGirlTV In Australia, yes, from the early 1960s the TV dial went from 0 up to 11 (and there was also Channel "5A" between Channels 5 and 6.) But Channel 0 in Melbourne (which this promo relates to) moved up the dial to Channel 10 in 1980.

  • There is such a thing as channel 0?

  • To bad they couldn't spell colour. But then again, it was channel 0.

  • Hugo Montenegro's "MacArthur Park" was used as the news theme for WJW-TV - WJKW-TV in Cleveland, Ohio for many, many years. They called their news program City Camera News. I like the Channel 0 version of this music better.

  • Still good for a tape that'd been in storage for over 30 years

  • I remember this particular promos series from when I was a kid - especially that dodgy last chord tacked onto "Macarthur Park"!
