Response to JesusLovinBuddy. A brief overview of the silly arguments that crop up in discussions on morality. More to come.

There was also an appeal to consequences in there, but I forgot to mention it. Just because you would LIKE there to be consequences for immoral actions, doesn't mean there actually ARE such consequences.

  • @cda6590 That may be so for Subjective Morality but it doesn't account for Morality in its entirety. Rulers aren't pointless since we implement a purpose for it, that would be nihilist logic gone wrong but that's not Scum's argument. If we, as a group of civilized people, wish to communicate our ideas pertaining to objects that can be utilized pragmatically then it would be in our best interest to have a standard we can all adhere to. This goes back to Scum's explanation in the video.

  • Thank you very much Tyler for your kind and thoughtful response. I look forward to further conversation with you.

  • Now that you bring it up, the ruler thing is a perfect analogy for subjective morality. Inches start at an arbitrary point (something like human suffering is BAD) to measure distance which is a real thing (people really do feel pain). Are we next going to say rulers are pointless because the system by which they measure is arbitrary? No! It still has its uses in the real world.
