The Henry County Sheriff's Office recently acquired three new Harley Davidson patrol motorcycles. These photos were taken by Mike E. Wilson on February 6, 2009 of Sgt. Eddie Crosser and Cpl. Milt Webb as they were patroling on Hwy 218 just west of Paris, TN. Sheriff Monte Belew incorporated the new bikes for the many economic and patrol benefits they offer in a time when gas is high and overall efficiency is key.
Under the Harley-Davidson contract, the company will supply the department with three brand new bikes every 12 months. "Then we give our old ones back to them in exchange for the new ones at no additional cost to us. You can't beat that," Belew said. In turn, Harley-Davidson will sell the older models as police demo bikes.
The department began using the bikes in February. "We typically use one bike per shift, day shift only," he said. "With all the wildlife we have around here, it's too dangerous to use them at night."
Belew said the motorcycles do save money on gas. "They get 42-45 miles to the gallon, while the cars get 15-16 miles to the gallon."
The department is "really excited about these," Belew said. "We like to be in the forefront of new projects. Your bigger departments have been using these for awhile, with great success. But it's rare to find them in rural settings."
