@FoxHatesMe Than after she handed out the toysshe would say to put them away and most kids did. Of course one was playing with the toy. Than she took away the toy saying "If I have know you were going to play with it I wouldn't have given it to you".Ummm hello? If u give a young kid a toy of course they are going to want to play with it. I really could keep going into how bad a teacher she was, what with the whole 4 is an odd number thing, but my "characters remaining" keeps running out. 0.o

So I observered a special ed class my mom works in. It was pretty bad. Not the kids or anything but the teacher was terrible (as in anything that caused the kids to misbehave was instigated by the teacher). I did noticed she used a lot of rewards though. For example if a kid was working quietly and sitting in his or her chair she'll give them a pixie stick. I guess thast not so bad because apparently sugar does not make a kid hyper. Also she would hand out little toys.

I think tying material gain to education is a great way to teach the value of education, not just a way to motivate children. We learn in order to understand the material aspects of nature and apply that knowledge we gained through learning to produce material values that nourish our material lives.
Think of all the math that's necessary to build coal mines and power plants, or to get a job running them. I think it's much more than just a childish motivation scheme.

Great video, You should apply to become a youtube partner.
MrCropper, have you read Alfie Kohn (1999) "Punished by Rewards". I think this read would be a good opposing view to better affirm or even change your position.

@andrewtr "have you read Alfie Kohn (1999) "Punished by Rewards"?
No, but I've listened to him speak and he is a superficial fool. He buys into Dewey and James 100%, going so far as to say kids learn by talking and interacting rather than passively listening. He obviously doesn't know the first thing about education; he may seem to be talking about education, but he is actually talking only about socialization and social skills. Needless to say, his ideas are a disaster in practice.

@MrCropper Quote from Kohn: "I want children to be altruistic."... "Altruism is simply helping other people because they need the help." ... "I want kids to help others even when they don't get anything out of it."
Kohn is NOT interested in education at all, but socialization, and that is a very sinister motive.

do you think that people who object to rewarding children materially in class also object to capitalism generally?

@dannidandannikins Yes, that's a safe bet. And if not generally, surely morally.
