Leif Ove Andsnes and Friends (Risør in Brussels)
Monday 22.11.2010 20:00
Royal Brussels Conservatory

This is the first time the Risør Festival has gone on tour - that it has been exported, for the delight of local music-lovers, to the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels (22, 23, and 24 November), to Wigmore Hall in London (26, 27, and 28 November), and to Carnegie Hall in New York (1, 2, 3, and 4 December). A festival is, of course, a particular place and atmosphere, but each of the great concert halls that will host the musicians has its own particular magic. And a festival is, after all, first and foremost about the performers, the repertoires, and a way of making music together - and that is something that can certainly be exported.

Risør, a charming fishing port in south-eastern Norway, hosted the twentieth edition of its chamber music festival in late June. Its artistic directors, since it began, the violist Lars Anders Tomter and the pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, have raised this gathering to the very highest level. Thanks to their international contacts, built up quite naturally in the course of their careers, they attract to Risør the best of their colleagues, internationally renowned soloists, and the crème de la crème of Scandinavian chamber musicians. Many young musicians also take part, delighted to be able to play alongside their elders, without any sense of hierarchy; some of these will be present at the three Brussels evenings, including the young violinist Henning Kraggerud (who will take over from Leif Ove Andsnes as artistic director of the festival next year) and the Risør Festival Strings, a chamber orchestra specially created for the festival.
