I NO LONGER WORK FOR THE MUSICIAN'S DEN, I NOW RESIDE AT THE GUITAR LAB, YOU CAN CONTACT ME EITHER HERE ON YOUTUBE OR BY SENDING A MESSAGE TO JASON@THEGUITARLAB.COM

Jason from The Musician's Den in Evansville, IN demonstrates building a stratocaster style parts guitar from a Warmoth neck and body. In part 11, we begin slotting the string nut. First I show you some of the nut slotting files that I'll be using, and then we'll put on the outside E strings and mark their appropriate locations on the nut.

  • What is the purpose of the neck jig body block? Sorry for all the questions,

    Mitch

  • @MitchRulzWorld Primarily the body block was designed to be a surrogate body so that when you refret the bolt neck guitars with heel adjusting truss rods you can make the necessary adjustments wo/ having to unjig the body and remove the neck each time.

I tend to use the body block a lot on non heel adjusting necks since it allows me to keep the body in the case, protecting it from any potential damage and allowing me better access to the frets over the tongue.

  • What kind of strings do you prefer for your personal guitars?

  • Nickel plated steel, or pure nickel alloy. Usually 10s on Fender scale guitars, and 11s on Gibson or PRS scale. Brand isn't so important to me, I doubt many people (including myself) cound tell a difference brand to brand in a double blind test).

  • Great vids. Are there any other luthier supplies other than stewmac and LMI that you could recommend?

  • @micolao It depends on how deep into this you're planning on getting. If you're aiming to be a professional repair tech who will deal with many different types of instruments, you're really going to need every conceivable nut file you can get your hands on. If you're just going to be working on your own guitars, you could maybe get away with an abbreviated set. Call me up at The Musician's Den and I can talk to you about it in depth.

  • @smbstressfest can you help me choose the gauges of an essential nut files set for guitar and bass from stewmac?

I'm on the budget so i can't buy all the gauges...

    what would you buy?

    thanks ;)

  • i'm always afraid that a string might snap and hit me in the eye or something. any tips on how to get rid of that fear? :p

  • @smbstressfest Oh. So it simulates simulates string tension so you're adjustments will be accurate, right? Thanks so much. Any suggestions on how to get experience with building guitars to be able to do it for a living? Thanks,

    Mitch

  • i thought about trying a set of dean markley blue steel 11's for my strat the other day, but the .052" low E string probably would have exceeded the limits of my factory nut slot for my low E.

  • I think they're available from the common lutherie supply shops; StewMac, LMII etc...
