My mom would love this video. She was pregnant with my oldest brother in 1956 and she and my dad would go see my great aunt and uncle, Orofina and Gil Brick, who lived just down A1A, in South Ponte Vedra Beach. Then after I was born (the youngest of 4) in 1962, mom would take us down there for a month (sometimes more!) in the summers until 1970 when my great aunt (who lived alone then) was killed in her home in May, 1970. It was pretty bad, no doubt. Times were changing fast then.
Yes, Manuel was with the Jax Bch PD for twenty five years. It was while he was working there that he met my mother. They were married in '77. Manuel retired in 2001. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to enjoy his retirement for long. He died in 2004, at the age of sixty one. I learned a lot from him, including a lot about being a man. I appreciate you sharing your memories about the motel and about Manuel.
I was told years ago that Manual became a police officer at Jax Beach. In time I moved away and lost contact with all the old gang. The Kilis motel was doing business during the heyday of Jax Bch (50's and early 60's) when the boardwalk was in full swing and tourists were having a big time at the beaches.
The father was a large gentleman who never spoke English when I was around. The mother worked in the restaurant cooking and cleaning. Hard working family. I spent many nights on the beach in front of the motel. My good friend Steve lived at the Weimers Lodge so we all grew up together in the mid 50's. The motel, restaurant and grocery store stayed very busy during the summer months.
They had a jukebox next to the soda fountain counter where I would listen to the rock & roll hits of the day. The family owned a large fishing boat that they launched on the beach in front of their house which was next to the motel on the other side of the street that led to the ramp. They also owned a grocery store that was on the other side of the street which faced First St. We would buy a coke in the bottle for 5 cents.
The Kilis motel and restaurant was next to Weimers Lodge in the 500 block of south first street. It was next to a ramp for cars to drive down on the beach. The Kilis family came from Greece as I recall. One of the two sons, Manual was a friend of mine for several years. I can't recall the name of the oldest son. I lived within a block of the motel. The restaurant was more of a soda fountain type place and sold beach wear, sunglasses, hamburgers, french fries, etc.
Is there anyone here who is familiar with the old Kilis Motel in Jax Beach? My stepfathers father owned the motel, and I can't seem to find anything about it online. Thanks
I was born in Jacksonville in 1958. I loved that beach. Thanks for the great memories! :)
