Wayne Barrington, a member of the Chicago Symphony from 1954-1964, was first and foremost an arist of the first rank. However, seeing the needs of the rank and file of the CSO eventually impelled him into union activism. In the early 1960s Wayne and his fellow orchestra committee members staged a showdown with James Petrillo, head of Chicago's Local 10 of the American Federation of Musicians. In his own words, Barrington gives this brief commentary on his rise as an activist along with a pivotal moment in union history.
