The United Nations' (UN) International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12th each year to recognise efforts of the world's youth in enhancing global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities.

Eight young people from around Nottingham volunteered to star in a mock TV chat show courtesy of Nottinghamshire YMCA and were given the opportunity to ask Cllr David Mellen, Portfolio Holder for Children's Services, questions about what Nottingham City Council promises to do for young people.

Recently the council released a new version of the Children's and Young People's Plan which outlines what the council plans to achieve by 2014 and the group asked Cllr Mellen about specific promises highlighted in the document, including jobs, things to do, places to go and transport.

The group also asked about particular projects that they have been involved in such as NGY myplace, the new state of the art youth space due to open in 2011 in the city centre and raised their concerns about budget cuts and how they could affect positive work such as this.

Cllr David Mellen, Portfolio Holder for Children's Services said: "The group were great, I was expecting some simple to answer questions but they really did their homework and definitely did not go easy on me! They were clearly very passionate about what they were talking about and wanted real answers. This just goes to show that all young people whatever walk of life they come from are keen to get involved and do their part for their community. I would like to encourage all young people to get involved with the council because we really do listen and you can make a difference."
