This effectively shows how one can get to Lyttelton (the port, located on the steep Port Hills) from Cathedral Square (the heart of Christchurch), Christchurch (NZ's third largest city), following a direct route which heads down ONLY six streets - Colombo (Christchurch's longest), Hereford (home of many International Colleges), Manchester (the red light district), High, Ferry Road and Tunnel Road (strangely classified as a motorway) which features New Zealand's longest road tunnel.

Don't be surprised if you see vehicles over 15 years old continually appearing in this vid - As salt is almost never used on New Zealand's roads in winder, New Zealander's generally keep their cars on the road far longer than other countries...

Consider this now a video time capsule of Christchurch and Lyttelton, which were struck by a disasterous earthquake on February 22 2011. Several of the buildings shown are sadly no more due to damage sustained.

Soundtrack is Rogue Traders - "World go round" (2005)

  • Nice vid - but you went a strange way!!

  • Whats the normal way to go, I'm from out of town!!!

  • Stay on colombo and head left at brougham street - far quicker! Are you planning any more vidz?

  • I was thinking to myself i wish someone would put a vid up fo what the city used to look like and then i stumbled over this glad i watched it was sad but nice at the same time... miss my city

  • @callmeloyal - the people of Christchurch are STILL amazing, warm, friendly and welcoming. The inner city is a bit too much peaceful and calm at the moment because it's empty. We will rebuild.

  • hmmm sad :( such a beautiful perfect city and then to be completely destroyed within minutes. The people of Christchurch are amazing, warm, friendly and welcoming and the city was peaceful and calm. Rise up xo

  • This video is a time capsule of the city before the earthquake. There's the Cathedral, Manchester Courts and all those lovely buildings we may never see again.

  • :( its been all smashed up

  • earthquake!!!!

  • This route is way cool. You get to thrash the 100km zone from 2:55 instead of joining up at 3:12.

  • That was fun, thanks. I used to live in ChCh and took the bus to Lyttelton a few times. Had forgotten all about it. The time lapsing was a good idea, and the song's tempo fit well. Fun. Thanks again.

  • Cool. i wanna visit your country. maybe one day.

  • Lol!Looks like you found every traffic light possible on your trip!
