Did you know there are people held in Guantanamo-like conditions just blocks from New York's City Hall? Guantanamo NYC brings you Radio Free Fahad, a weekly performance vigil organized by Theaters Against War and "broadcast" on the streets of lower Manhattan every Monday night from 6-7pm, just outside of the Metropolitan Correctional Center where Fahad Hashmi has been held in severe solitary confinement for over two and half years awaiting trial.
The first broadcast features performances by Wallace Shawn, Kathleen Chalfant, and musical group Mahina Movement, as well as a cast of THAW street performers and words from Fahad's family and legal council. They wish to register their concern about the conditions of his detention, constraints on Fahad's right to a fair trial, and the potential threat his case poses to the First Amendment rights of others.
