Florida RNs, members of National Nurses United/NNOC and SEIU Healthcare Florida, rallied and lobbied legislators to support the Florida Hospital Patient Protection Act. The bill, sponsored by Senator Tony Hill, and State Representative Oscar Braynon II, provides minimum RN-to-patient ratios. The bill will also protect RNs who speak out about unsafe staffing at their hospital.
Nurses across the country have been plagued with heavy workloads that endanger patients and prevent nurses from doing the job they love. At a Tallahassee conference on ratios and rights, nurses talked about RNs who had left the profession because they couldn't adequately care for their patients under current staffing conditions.
