The death spiral is great. That is the risk. The sport should be loads of fun, but is the glory of a death spiral worth the risk of injury and another statistic? Does he still D-spiral?
Im sure he is a good pilot but it only takes one mistake.

Any ideas what caused him to keep spiralling? Did he black out, or was he inexperienced and unable to judge that he was so close to the ground?
I assume he was doing an acro maneuver and meant to exit the spiral just before landing.
