Issued December 1971 in Canada on Capitol 72653.

Edward Bear was formed in Toronto in 1967. They were signed to Capitol of Canada in 1969 by visionary A&R head Paul White, and issued their first album in 1970. Original members were Larry Evoy, Paul Weldon and Danny Marks. This lineup lasted two albums and several tours, after which Marks exited. He was replaced by guitarist Roger Ellis, who plays on this single. It charted in the US at #68, but went to #3 on CHUM Toronto, and placed similarly in other markets across Canada. The recording features fairly early use of Moog synthesizer to simulate horns. It may sound dated now, but at the time, it was cutting edge!

  • Too bad Larry Evoy got sucked into L. Ron Hubbard's sci-fi religion Scientology. Evoy even became a poster boy, appearing frequently in '70s Scientology recruitment ads in mags. I can't help wondering about Scientology's goofy claims that it creates geniuses and super-artists. Many artists seem to have become Scientologists AFTER becoming successful, not BECAUSE of Scientology! I can't think of one who showed progressive genius after years in Scientology.

Fading & fizzling's seems more typical.

  • I saw the last incarnation of Edward Bear at a pub at McMaster University, during which Evoy went into a Scientologist rant, and the audience booed him off the stage. That was a sad spectacle to witness...

  • wow mojo you sure do a great job -- I just got into yt and am really enjoying it --- and i thought i had a lot of oldies and cancon stuff ....

  • Thanks a lot! Hey, I'm just getting started! Hang around awhile, and you'll be pleasantly surprised!

  • I'm glad you both liked it. I'm trying to post stuff that somebody else hasn't already posted. So far, so good!

  • I remember the song, this happened to me. I did fly across the sea , to help him get off his Knees, and suddenly he died , I could not help him anymore,The gift I did receive was to be able to see him one more time , before he left for the gates of heaven. Your song lives within me xx Annie

  • The best thing about Edward Bear is that Joe Jackson wanted to start a band called Edward Bear, and Larry and the boys forced him to drop the name and try something else...
