A song Ray Davies (especially) would be proud to have written!

@aboosh02 This song was a harbinger of things to come from the mind of Jeff Lynne. Brilliant. Melodic. Rocking. Fantastic. How is ELO not in the RRHOF!? It's a crime.

@schtickkicker It sounds like the light reverb on the harmony vocal goes totally dry and maybe dialed out with some EQ to give it a bit of the old AM radio sound. On further listen it also sounds like one of the harmony vocals is somewhat lagging in time and dropped in pitch (Could it possibly be a slowed tape effect or the old fashioned flange effect by slowing the second tape machine way down to where it goes beyond phasing into an actual drop in pitch?). Jeff Lynne knows.

can anyone give me some info or informed speculation as to what kind of effects are, uh, in effect for the little vocal solo break @ 2:07 ? Warm compression with cake icing? minimal rapid flange? the sound really sticks with me, and i'd appreciate a clue...thanks in advance!

The Birthday - The Idle Race [Birmingham, England] - 1968 - "A nice sounding British Invasion-Pop-esque song with notable vocals and beat." - Back to the Story [Original Recording Remastered] [Import Hong Kong] (EMI Records Ltd.) (Disc 1)-2007.

I always thought McCartney got his idea for The Beatles version of Birthday from this cool tune- especially with the LP version- having the traditional, stringed version. Has Paul or Jeff ever commented?

I so agree not a bad track on the album.

The only image that doesn't belong is the one of Carolyn Jones and John Astin (Morticia and Gomez). That show was on the air from 1964-1966, although I'm sure reruns were airing in a few places in 1968.
