A family of Baboons, including two babies, playing and watching us at Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya on August 24th, 2009. We were in a group with Dragoman Overland.
This family of Baboons was huge and caused us a few problems this morning. When we woke up in the campsite there must have been about 40 of them at various places nearby - some right outside the toilets, some scavenging where our fire was the night before, some near tents. When we started preparing breakfast they came closer - one in particular decided to try his luck and try to steal our food, rip open our bins etc. I was given the job of scaring them away - which was an experience.
This was encounter number 2 for me with Baboons - as when I was in Namibia in 2002 a family of them raided our campsite, broke into our truck, ate all of our food, stole half our medical kit and left smelly deposits everywhere.
The Baboons in this video, as there were babies, were mainly just hanging around watching us and not causing any trouble. None of the Baboons in Kenya really caused trouble as such - they were just trying their luck. If they were problematic I wouldn't have been able to scare them away like I did.
All part of the experience in Africa tho - great experiences, great scenery and getting close to the animals.... be sure to check out my two videos of my trek to see the Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda.
