AC/DC are a hard rock band formed in Sydney, Australia, in 1973 by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young. The band are considered pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal,[1][2] alongside bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.[3][4][5][6] Its members, however, have always classified their music as "rock 'n' roll".[7]

AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album, High Voltage, in 1975. Membership remained stable until bassist Cliff Williams replaced Mark Evans in 1977. In 1979, the band recorded their highly successful album Highway to Hell. Lead singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott died on February 19, 1980, after a night of heavy alcohol consumption. The group briefly considered disbanding, but soon ex-Geordie singer Brian Johnson was selected as Scott's replacement. Later that year, the band released their largest selling album, Back in Black.

The band's next album, For Those About to Rock We Salute You, was also highly successful and was their first album to reach No. 1 in the United States. AC/DC declined in popularity soon after the departure of drummer Phil Rudd in 1983. Poor record sales continued until the release of The Razors Edge in 1990. Phil Rudd returned in 1994 and contributed to the band's 1995 album Ballbreaker. Stiff Upper Lip was released in 2000 and was well received by critics. A new album was announced in 2004 and is expected sometime in 2008.

AC/DC have sold an estimated 150 million albums worldwide,[8][9] including 68 million albums in the US[10] Back in Black has sold an estimated 42 million units worldwide[11] and 22 million in the US alone,[12] making it the 5th highest-selling album ever in the USA. AC/DC are ranked fourth on VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock[13] and were ranked by MTV the 7th "Greatest Heavy Metal Band Of All Time".[14]
AC/DC（エーシーディーシー）は、アンガス・ヤング、マルコム・ヤングのヤング兄弟を中心にオーストラリアのシドニーで、1973年12月に結成されたロックバンドで­ある。 バンド名の由来は掃除機の裏側に「AC/DC」と書かれているのを見て、ヤング兄弟の姉が当時から大音量で演奏していた彼らに対して、掃除機の喧しさに例えて名付けたそう­だ。 「AC/DC」とは「交直両用」の意であるが、実はバイ・セクシャルを表す隠語（日本語で"両刀使い"）でもあったため、バンド初期にはよく勘違いされてゲイバーから出演­依頼が来たという。スコットランドのグラスゴーで生まれたアンガス、ジョージ、マルコムのヤング兄弟が家族と共にオーストラリアのシドニーに移住したのは1963年のこと­である。

一番最初に楽器を手にしたのはジョージであった。その後、彼は60年代にオーストラリアで有名であったThe Easybeatsのリズムギターとして活躍する(ジョージとThe Easybeatsのリードギタリスト、Harry Vandaはその後、初期AC/DCのアルバムプロデューサーとして活躍する事となる)。アンガスとマルコムが彼に続くのに時間はさしてかからず、兄弟が組んだ最初のバン­ドの名はThe Velvet Underground(ニューヨークのパンク・バンドとは同名異バンド)。


[編集] バンド結成当初
1973年11月、マルコムとアンガスはベースにLarry Van Kriedt、ボーカルにDave Evans、ドラムにColin Burgessを迎えAC/DCを結成、初のライブは1973年12月31日、シドニーのChequersというクラブで行った。程なくしてバンドはEMIがオーストラリ­アとニュージーランドで配給を行っていたローカルレーベル「Albert Records」と契約を結ぶ。最初期のラインナップは安定しておらず特にドラムとベースは頻繁に入れ替わっていおり、Colin Burgessにいたっては数週間しか在籍しなかった。この状態は約1年程続いたようである。またアンガス兄弟はゲーリー・グリッターの様なグラムロッカーからの影響が強­かったDave Evansはバンドに合っていないと結成直後から考えおり、バンドのマネージャーだったDennis Laughlinが彼の代わりにステージに上がるという事もあった(この事がボーカリスト交代劇の伏線となっておりDave EvansはDennis Laughlinを酷く恨んでいたという)。

バンドのトレードマークとも言えるアンガスのスクールボーイスタイルの衣装はこの頃から既に試されており、アンガス自身の中学校の制服とシドニーにあるアッシュフィールド­高校の制服を使用していた(このスタイルは彼の姉であるマーガレット・ヤングの提案によるものである)。ただ当時はこの衣装だけでなく、ゴリラや怪傑ゾロ、スーパー・アン­グなるスーパーマンのパロディーの様な物まで衣装にしていた。

この頃、バンドの器材車のドライバーをしていたのはあのボン・スコットだった。
