California is creating a network of MPAs (Marine Protected Areas) along it's coast for one simple reason -- MPA work. Over fifty nations around the world are now implementing MPAs as the primary means of protecting ocean wildlife. In this public service announcement a number of celebrities (Pierce Brosnan, John C. McGinley ("Scrubs"), Edie McClurg "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"), Gabby Reece (fashion model/professional volleyball player), Amy Smart ("The Butterfly Effect"), Christa Miller ("Scrubs"), Simon Helberg ("The Big Bang Effect") help send out the message that a new day has arrived for protecting the oceans because ... MPAs Work!

  • I would like to know which of these people has ever dropped a hook and line into the waters of California, or foraged for food for themselves or their family in our waters. I'm sorry, but I have a really hard time believing anything about fishing from a bunch of Hollywood types who's idea of fishing is picking up a pound of $24 sushi grade ahi at the local Whole Foods Market (or having their personal assistant do it).

    Laughable!

  • Fuck the MLPA. go to dfg.ca.gov, and see for yourself. They are attempting to turn the ENTIRE coastline into a massive no-take-zone. FUCK political activism!! Fuck Political Enviromentalism.

  • What do all the people in this video have in common?....They are ignorant hollywood actors who have no idea of the negative effects the MLPA will have on the local fisheries. If an area is closed to comercial sea urchin harvesting the local population will grow to large and eat all the kelp forests, and when the kelp forests disapear so will all the fish that call it home. So responsible harvesting of these resorces is needed inorder to keep everything in balance.

  • You are proposing closing down areas to users. There is no single over fished specie in California. You are not protecting the ocean, you are shutting it down to access. This is selfish, totalitarian and ignorant.

  • @tattuna maybe because MLPA is on the payroll by some oil industrial company(ies).

  • As opposed to you who sit in your mom's basement posting stupid comments on youtube videos and looking at porn

  • The MLPA act prohibits fishing, but allows for the exploration of oil and minerals. Brilliant! Fishing is not the demise of our waters. Why no mention of coastal development, pollution, or sewage run off???

  • Yes. They do some blow and watch the wall aquarium and shout on their iPhones to their friends about the killing. Good stuff...

  • This will be settled in court. Let's see...MAP 4 coming next? Enviro nuts have played a great game so far but we'll see...

  • MLPA'S = Loss of jobs, loss of productive fishing grounds, loss of local culture. The only science backing MLPA'S is the science that was paid for by the top sponsors of this crime. MlPA'S are a knee jerk reaction that will cause more harm then good. I would be all for stricter bag limits, even though it is not necessary. I spend way more time in the ocean then these actors, who are so detached from the earth that they want to kill a part of CA's culture. Support proposal 2.
