So is all of the English for the benefit of foreigners, or is reading English a fairly widespread skill among Japanese? (If so, feeling a bit inadequate at the moment).

I had no idea they had Circle K's in Japan
Westerners are guilty of this too, Ive seen many a shirts with random katakana and kanji pasted together.
My favorite was a T-shirt my dad brought and the logo said "Big Man" (大きい男). I burst out laughing when I saw it and he didn't quite believe me at first.

Oh, just in case you were interested, the reason that many establishments don't accept people with tattoos (apparantly some just don't accept people with particularly large tattoos) is because members of the Yakuza have large tattoos that denote their membership and status. Thus, it's their way of keeping the Yakuza out.
That's just what I heard. Not sure if it's correct or not.
