Awards for Outstanding Researchers (Professor N T Sohan Wijesekera of Moratuwa University)

The Government recognized the accomplishment and contribution made by academic staff of the Sri Lankan university system in the field of research, innovation and invention at the third awards of Committee of Vice Chancellors and Director of Sri Lanka (CVCD) at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa awarded CVCD awards to six outstanding academic staffers in Sri Lankan universities who showed exemplary performances and made remarkable achievements in the fields of Health Science, Technology, Biological sciences, Physical Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences.

The awards ceremony was organized by CVCD which was established in 1979 under the Universities Act as an advisory body to the University Grants Commission. It comprises 17 Vice Chancellors of State universities and three rectors of university campuses.

Ruhuna University Senior Lecturer Dr Manjula Deshapriya Hettiarachchi received the award for the most outstanding young researcher. Dr Hettiarachchi joined the Nuclear Medicine Unit of the Medical Faculty as a probationary lecturer in 2001.

Prof Kularatne has an MBBS with Honours from the Peradeniya University in 1983 and obtained his MD with Board Certification from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine.

He has done extensive research since 1994 in relation to snakes and snakes bite, Dengue fever, Chikangunya, Hanta virus, Rabies, Leptospyrosis and Ricketsiosis. His research has led to a large number of presentations at scientific meetings and publications in journals.

Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake, CVCD Chairman and Kelaniya University Vice Chancellor Prof Sarath Amunugama and University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Gamini Samaranayake were present.
