26 New Cadets were welcomed into North Wales Police last night in an inaugural ceremony at Colwyn Bay. A further 34 will be welcomed into the extended police family this evening.

The young recruits, aged between 16 and 17 years, were not only the first police Cadets in Wales but were also the first of the 60 Cadets to be accepted into the new initiative which was launched just over six months ago.

Sergeant Melanie Brace, responsible for the development of the initiative, Eastern Division Commander Chief Superintendent Phil Thomson and Police Authority Chair Ian Roberts accompanied proud parents, relatives and friends to welcome the teenagers to North Wales Police.

It was also a special evening for Deputy Chief Constable Clive Wolfendale, who joined Greater Manchester Police as a cadet some years ago. He told those present: "I cannot help but feel immense and a little personal pride as 32 years ago I embarked on the same journey when I started my enrolment with the police cadets."

"North Wales Police and the Authority are committed to helping young people in North Wales thrive and succeed. We have an unequivocal commitment to reducing crime and reduce road casualties. We want young people to play their part in that effort. We also see the cadets as an integral part of the police family."

The Cadets have gone through a rigorous enrolment process which involved structured interviews, a medical examination and vetting process.

Dressed in full cadet uniform of black trousers, polo shirt and cap all trimmed with emerald green, each new member was presented with their identity card ready to start their two year development and duty. A maximum of 20 cadets will ultimately be based in each territorial division.

Chief Superintendent Phil Thomson, Eastern Divisional Commander commented: "NWP recognises that young people have an important part to play within their communities. The force is committed to positive action with young people and the volunteer cadet scheme is a further extension to this."

  • Great initivate, would be good to roll it out over the country and help bridge the gap between police and young people
